Stecklenburg of the South ( 2004)

The Stecklenburg is a medieval castle ruins in the eastern Harz on a small hill just a few hundred meters from the village Stecklenberg ( Thale ) located in the district of Harz, in Saxony- Anhalt.

The hill fort was built in the 11th century on the site of an earlier castle. In the 12th century it was destroyed in a fight, but rebuilt. The new owner was in 1281 the monastery in Halberstadt.

Until the early 18th century, the Stecklenburg was inhabited. After some buildings of the castle as brewery and castle chapel were demolished. It was completely up to the ruins and served as a quarry. Before total destruction, it was preserved by the intervention of the then Chief Ranger of Thale, which was committed to a receipt of the work.

Today the ruins Stecklenburg is a protected monument and a popular tourist destination. Have been preserved some walls of residential buildings and the remains of the keep. The ruins Lauenburg is located only a few hundred meters from the Stecklenburg.
