Steel River (Ontario)

The Steel River is a tributary of Lake Superior in Thunder Bay District in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The Steel River has its origin in the Cairngorm Lake, which he leaves on its northern shore. About the Esker Lake, it flows from the elongated Steel Lake, where it flows all the way from south to north. It flows for a short distance further north in a north-easterly direction until it meets the coming of North Little Steel River. Following the unification of the two rivers of the Steel River flows in a southerly direction and lies 60 kilometers from the Santoy Lake. This it flows and flows finally 15 km east of Terrace Bay in Lake Superior. At its mouth crosses the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 17 Ontario ) the river.

The Steel River has the outflow from the long lake Cairngorm Lake to its mouth in Lake Superior has a length of about 140 km.

The Steel River up to its confluence with the Santoy Lake and a portion of the river its tributary the Little Steel River lie in the Steel River Provincial Park.

The river is a target of canoeists. The so-called Steel Circle Route leads from Santoy Lake on the Diablo Lake Portage to Cairngorm Lake. From there, the paddling route leads the Steel River down to the starting point. The 130 km long distance can be overcome in 8 days.
