Stefan Ernst Hugo Kaufmann ( born June 8, 1948 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German biologist.

Life

Kaufmann in 1977 received his doctorate at the University of Mainz and qualified in 1981 for the compartments Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Berlin. In Mainz he was a pupil of Paul Small immunologists.

From 1987 to 1991 he was Professor (C3 ) for Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ulm and from 1991 to 1998 Professor ( C4) at the Department of Immunology at the same university. He is since 1993 director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, where he was one of the founding directors. He is also since 1998, professor of microbiology and immunology at the Charité in Berlin.

Kaufmann is a collector of medical - historical works.

Work

Kaufmann has published more than 600 scientific papers and review articles and is the world according to the Institute for Scientific Information one of the most cited immunologists.

His current research interests focus on deciphering the cell-mediated immune response against intracellular bacteria, the development and testing of a new and improved vaccine against tuberculosis, as well as biomarkers for the reliable diagnosis of progress and outcome of the disease. A he developed tuberculosis vaccine is currently in Phase II clinical testing. He continues to work hard for a better understanding of immunology and infectious diseases among the public ( EFIS - Day of Immunology ).

2010-2013 was a merchant alternating advisory board member of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization ( GAVI). Since 2014 he is a member of the Strategic Advisory Committee of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership ( EDCTP). Kaufmann is a member of the Executive Board and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Robert Koch Foundation, the Robert Koch the price and the Robert Koch Gold Medal awarded annually.
