Stefano Ittar

Steffano Ittar (* 1724 in Ovruch, † 1790 in Malta ) was a Polish architect who was active mainly in Italy. He is one of the most important representatives of the Sicilian Baroque.

He was (now Ovroch ) born in Owrócz, a city in Poland - Lithuania, which is part of the Ukraine today.

There is little known about the first half of his life. From 1754 to 1759 he moved to Rome, where he furthered his education and remained until he moved to Catania in 1765.

There he married in 1767 Rosaria, daughter of Francesco Battaglia, an important architect, who was state architect of Catania in his time. He had nine children, including Sebastiano and Enrico, who took over his father's profession.

He realized the Porta Ferdinandea ( 1768), Piazza di S.Filippo ( 1768-1769 ) and the Chiesa della Trinità. For the Benedictine monastery of San Nicolò l' Arena he built the dome of the church ( 1768-80 ) and the current Piazza Dante ( 1774-75 ).

In 1785 he moved to Malta, where he died in 1790.
