Stegastes

Stegastes variabilis, juvenile

Stegastes is a genus of damselfish (Pomacentridae ). The genus lives widespread in shallow waters of tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific region of the world. In the western Atlantic ( Bermuda, the Caribbean to the coast of Brazil ) the fish known as " Gregory " in English represent about half of the Riffbarscharten.

Features

Stegastes species have the damselfish for typical stocky physique. You can reach depending on the type lengths from 7.5 to 17 centimeters. While young fish are often very colorful, with bright yellow, blue or red, the full-grown animals are simple, dark and usually monochrome, brownish or green -gray.

Way of life

Most Stegastes species are omnivorous. Some live as farmers and fish feed mainly herbivores of filamentous algae. In their area they cultivate them tasting algae species. Pluck inedible algae from the substrate to give their preferred place to grow and defend their territory against other plant-eating fish, such as doctor and rabbit fish. Algae-eating small invertebrates, such as snails, hermit crabs, starfish and some take it in her mouth and carry them away.

As all investigated damselfish are Stegastes substrate spawners, they prefer for spawning caves or crevices.
