Steinn Steinarr

Steinn Steinarr (actually Adalsteinn Kristmundsson; born October 13, 1908 on the farm Laugaland, Westfjords, † May 25, 1958 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic poet.

Many Icelanders Steinarr see as their greatest poet. Outside of his native country, he is still not well known. There are no translations of his works.

Life

The son of poor farmers from the north west of Iceland came at the age of 18 years to Reykjavík. He was penniless and suffering from muscle wasting in the left arm, but had in Stefán Sigurðsson frá Hvítadal a mentor who introduced him to poets and thinkers like the later Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness. During the world economic crisis Steinarr turned to the Communists, but was expelled from the Communist Party of Iceland.
