Steinrode is a former municipality in the Thuringian district Eichsfeld that originated on July 1, 1950 through the merger of places Epschenrode and Wernigerode and since December 1, 2011 is part of the rural community of Sunstone. The inhabitants are called Steinröder.

History

Epschenrode and Wernigerode were 1945 municipalities in the Prussian district county Hohenstein. 1945-1949 were the places part of the Soviet zone of occupation and in 1949 the GDR. The community Steinrode was taken on July 1, 1950 as part of a local government reform by the merger of places Epschenrode and Wernigerode. From 1961 until the turn and reunion 1989/1990 Steinrode was affected by the closure of the nearby German border. Since 1990, the city is part of the re-established state of Thuringia. On 1 December 2011, the municipality Steinrode joined together with the seven other municipalities of the administrative community Eichsfeld- Suedharz to the rural community of Sunstone.
