Stephanie Nakasian

Patricia Stephanie Nakasian ( born August 29, 1954 in Washington, DC) is an American jazz singer and music teacher.

Life and work

Nakasian grew up in Bronxville and studied classical violin and piano playing and singing. After studying economics at Northwestern University, where she earned a BA and MBA, she worked for banking companies in New York and Chicago, until 1981, before she worked full time as a musician.

1983/84 she went with Jon Hendricks on tour. Since 1980 she has worked mainly with pianist Hod O'Brien, with whom she is married and has one daughter. She went on since then in several radio shows, including a tribute program on them composers Hoagy Carmichael and Walter Donaldson; In addition, she performed together with Urbie Green, Pat Metheny, Clark Terry, Scott Hamilton, Hank Jones, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones and Annie Ross.

She teaches voice at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg ( Virginia). They also regularly gave workshops at schools and teacher training. She wrote the textbook It's Not on the Page! How to Integrate Jazz and Jazz Rhythm into Choral and solo repertoire, which appeared in 2001.

In 1989 she presented her debut album Comin 'Alive, where she was accompanied by Phil Woods, Wayne Andre, Warren Chiasson, Hod O'Brien, Nabil Totah and Bill Goodwin. There also were several tribute albums for singers like Billie Holiday, Lee Wiley and June Christy.
