Warren Chiasson

Warren Chiasson ( born April 17, 1934 in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian jazz vibraphonist, pianist and composer.

Life and work

Chiasson grew up in Sydney ( Nova Scotia ) that had first violin lessons and learned to play guitar, piano and trumpet. On the vibraphone, he is self-taught in the first place, but had in the late 1950s shortly lessons with Lennie Tristano and George Russell, when he came to New York City. There he worked until 1961 when George Shearing; thereafter he founded his own formation. He worked as a musician even at a Broadway show and also played with Eric Dolphy, Chet Baker, Les MCCANN and Tal Farlow. In 1962 he participated in Gunther Schuller's Concerto Perspectives of New Music at Carnegie Hall and has also worked in the orchestras of Buddy Morrow, Lee Castle, Vaughn Monroe and Sammy Kaye, 1964/65 in the house band of the New York World's Fair. In the late 1960s he played as a percussionist in the Broadway musical Hair. During this time he also worked with Bill Dixon and Grachan Moncur III and led a formation with Jimmy Garrison, Sonny Brown, and Arnie Lawrence.

In 1972, he starred again with Shearing and also took a first album under his own name (quart Essence ), also played with Chet Baker ( 1974). The following year he went with the singer Roberta Flack on tour and appeared as soloist in the New York jazz club Gregory's. Otherwise, since the 70's worked as a freelance musician, among others, Frank Strozier, Lee Konitz, Joe Farrell, Jim Hall, Jimmy Raney, Chuck Wayne, Joe Puma, Dick Garcia and Gene Bertoncini. In 1977 he released an album with Kurt Weill interpretations.

1984 had Chiasson at the B.B. King Album Blues ' n Jazz with, which was awarded the Grammy Award. In 1988 he stood in for Lionel Hampton in a new performance of the legendary Carnegie Hall concert in 1938 by Benny Goodman. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked as a solo pianist and taught at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. He also wrote a textbook ( The Contemporary vibraphonist ), and some compositions, such as Bossa Nova Scotia, Ultramarine and Bravel.
