Frank Strozier

Frank R. Strozier ( born June 13, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American alto saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer of the hard bop.

Life and work

Strozier had piano as a child and later saxophone lessons and grew up in the rhythm and blues Memphis with schoolmates such as George Coleman, Hank Crawford, Harold Mabern and Booker Little on. In 1954 he started at the Conservatory of Chicago to study music, graduating in 1958. During his studies he participated in sessions with musicians such as Johnny Griffin and Clifford Jordan, played with Booker Little and 1957 with Walter Perkins ' MJT 3 group, with the Strozier first time in 1958 went to New York. There he took in 1960, the album Waltz Of The Demons co-led a quintet with Booker Little on. 1961 to 1964 he played in the quartet of Roy Haynes, 1963, he was one short of the band by Miles Davis, and was on tour with him; In 1965, he settled in Los Angeles. In the same year he was a member of the band of Shelly Manne, played an album with Chet Baker and then belonged to the band of Oliver Nelson and Don Ellis Orchestra. Mostly, however, Strozier worked as a studio musician in Hollywood in commercial areas.

1971 Strozier moved to New York, there was a teacher and played with the Jazz Contemporaries, the New York Jazz Repertory Company in 1974, then at the same time. Using the octet of George Coleman and the quartet of Louis Hayes, with whom he visited Europe in 1976 1976 and 1977 albums emerged again under his own name; besides, he was throughout his career to recordings with McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Booker Ervin, Shelly Manne, MJT 3, Don Ellis, Harold Mabern, Bobby Pierce, Horace Parlan and Johnny Griffin involved.
