Stephen Heller

Stephen ( István ) Heller ( born May 15, 1813 in Budapest, † January 14, 1888 in Paris) was a Hungarian pianist and composer.

Life

Heller was an early student of the renowned piano teacher Anton Halm in Vienna and was there for the first time in 1827 as a pianist public concerts. At the end of 1829 only to start a concert tour he fell ill in 1830 in Augsburg, where he remained until 1838, and then to go to Paris. There he associated with Frédéric Chopin, Hector Berlioz and Franz Liszt.

Works

As a composer, he sat down, although judged positively by Robert Schumann, only gradually. The breakthrough came with the set of Liszt in Paris Concert Etude La chasse. Its about 150 works are composed almost exclusively for the piano. Most are shorter genre or character pieces. In addition, Heller has also opera transcriptions and fantasies written and Schubert songs made ​​famous by his transcriptions in France. With numerous etudes he has (to date) acted piano educational. His compositional style is based on the German Romantic ( Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy ), his late work has already advance to the French impressionism.
