Stephen of Bourbon

Stephen de Bourbon ( Stephen of Bourbon ) or Etienne de Bourbon ( * 1190 in Belleville -sur -Saône, † 1261 in Lyon) was a Dominican Inquisitor of the 13th century. He was the author of the most important Exemplumsammlung for preachers, the so-called " Exempla " of this century: the Tractatus de diversis mate riis predicabilibus (short: De diversis mate riis predicabilibus ). Jacques de Vitry addition he was the greatest storyteller of religious stories in medieval France.

Biography

Etienne de Bourbon was born towards the end of the 12th century in Belleville, near Lyon. From 1217 to 1223, he joined the Dominicans in Paris.

Approximately 1223 to 1250 he was General preacher who developed his activity in many places, as in the area of ​​Lyon (then part of the German Empire was formed ), Burgundy, Lorraine, the Forez, the Massif Central, the Diocese of Valence, the Roussillon, the Savoie.

Étienne de Bourbon was one of the first inquisitors. He has written a catalog of the "errors" of faith. This list has been reused by other Inquisitors, such as by Bernard Gui in the 14th century in his Manuel de l' Inquisiteur.

About 1250 he undertook the Tractatus de diversis mate riis predicabilibus draw. It contained more than 3,000 stories of different origin. The original manuscript is lost. One of the most important manuscripts of the 13th century, now preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, was found in the Bibliothèque the Sorbonne, chained, to prevent its theft.
