Stevan Knićanin

Stevan Petrović Knićanin ( Стеван Петровић Книћанин, * 1809 in Knić, † May 26, 1855 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian general.

Life

Originally clerk, he went in 1832 in the vicinity of Prince Miloš, to which he exercised great influence. In 1835 he was promoted Brigadier Captain of Josenitza, 1839 to the District Chief of Smederevo. Under the Prince Michael, he lost influence and was even expelled from the country after he had participated in 1840 in an uprising against him.

In 1842, he was however recalled by Alexander I. again. In 1848, he placed himself at the head of a volunteer corps of 3,000 men, which was the Austrian Serbs are against the Hungarian rebels to help. He was appointed to the National Supreme, but had to retreat across the river Tisza before the Hungarians.

By order of his government, he returned in 1849 back in the homeland, was Senator, Secretary of War in 1854 and counselor of Prince Alexander I. For his achievements in the fight against the revolution in Hungary, he became a Knight of the Order of Maria Theresa.

Stefan Petrović Knićanin died on 26 May 1855 in Belgrade.
