Steve Bassam, Baron Bassam of Brighton

John Steven Bassam, Baron Bassam of Brighton ( born June 11, 1953) is a British politician ( Labour and Co-operative Party ).

Bassam studied at the University of Sussex and the University of Kent and graduated with a masters in social work. He then worked as a social worker of the London Borough of Camden. Later he took over other tasks in local government and led from 1988 to 1997 the Departments of Environmental Health and Consumer Affairs of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities and later the Local Government Association.

During his first years in Brighton Bassam was squatter and founded the Squatters Union, to occupy themselves for the right to vacant apartments and houses and began to improve the living conditions of squatters.

Bassam became increasingly involved in local politics, in 1983 councilor in Brighton, 1986-1997 President of the Council and from 1996 to 1999 Chairman of the Council of Brighton and Hove. He joined the general election in 1987 for the constituency of Brighton Kemptown, opposite the candidate of the Conservative Party, Andrew Bowden, but was not elected.

1997 Bassam was raised as Baron Bassam of Brighton, of Brighton in the County of East Sussex for Life Peer and has been a member of the House of Lords. He is there Whip the government and spokesman for the Cabinet Office and the Home Office.

Bassam and his partner Jill Whittaker have two daughters and a son (another died in infancy ).
