Steve Charnovitz

Steve Charnovitz (* 1953 in Savannah, Georgia) is an American lawyer and professor at George Washington University.

Education and professional career

Charnovitz completed his studies at Yale University where he was awarded both the Bachelor of Arts as well as the academic degree of Juris Doctor. Subsequently, he attended the Harvard Kennedy School, where he graduated with a Master of Public Policy. After graduating, he joined the Civil Service and was employed by the Department of Labor of the United States. There he dealt first with workers' rights. Later he moved to the Department of International Affairs and was responsible for the technical cooperation with Saudi Arabia. From 1984 to 1985 he worked, sponsored by the American Political Science Association, for Senator Carl Levin. Between 1987 and 1991 he was a member of the Speaker of the House, Jim Wright and Tom Foley. In 1991 he moved to the Competitiveness Policy Council, an initiative to strengthen the competitiveness of the state. From 1995 to 1999 Charnovitz worked as director of the Global Environment and Trade Study at Yale University, before taking up the legal profession and worked in the Washington office of the law firm WilmerHale. In 2004, he received a call from George Washington University.

Memberships

Charnovitz is as an attorney in both New York and Washington, DC admitted. He is co-editor of numerous journals, including about the American Journal of International Law. In addition, he serves on the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Law Institute.
