Stiklestad

Stiklestad is a place in the municipality of Verdal the province of Nord-Trøndelag in the middle of Norway.

Stiklestad is best known as the scene of the Battle of Stiklestad where the Norwegian national hero Olav the Holy (Saint Olav ) was killed on 29 July 1030. This was an important milestone in the transition of Norway to Christianity. Every year is reminiscent of the last days of St. Olav in a play: Spelet om Heilag Olav ( The Play of Saint Olav ). This piece was first performed in 1954.

Stiklestad Nasjonale Kultursenter is an active institution that maintains a museum, an open air theater and a historic cemetery. The associated course and conference hotel and the Stiklestad Church also offer many cultural activities.

A national monument was erected in 1944 on the historic ground in Stiklestad of the National Socialist Party in Norway Nasjonal Samling. The monument was created by sculptor Wilhelm Rasmussen and the then Prime Minister Vidkun Quisling has inaugurated it. After the end of the German occupation in May 1945 and the banning of the Nasjonal Samling, the monument was removed and buried.
