Stockaryd

Stockaryd is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Jönköping County, the historical province of Småland. It is part of the municipality Sävsjö.

History

The urban area was inhabited in prehistoric times. And situated in the city cemetery of Stockaryd from the Iron Age goes back to this.

As the southern Swedish railway line was completed in Södra stambanan 1864, the agricultural village Stockaryd quickly grew and became a village. In the years 1906 and 1907 the Church of Stockaryd, which replaced a previous building from the late 17th century arose. The heyday of the town was around 1920-1970. Thereafter, the population began to decline. For this reason, the house prices are relatively low. There are also a few apartments.

Stockaryd is from the 1950s, the center of the Swedish bench production.

Personalities

In Gostad, near Stockaryds, the Swedish physicist and oceanographer Vagn Walfrid Ekman (1874-1954) was born. The Swedish actress Kerstin Moheden came in 1917 in Stockaryd on the world.
