Vrigstad

Vrigstad is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Jönköping County, the historical province of Småland.

The place is situated on the southern slope of the Småland highlands at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by lakes and forests.

History

The place in the community Sävsjö is an old trading post and lies along the trade route Vetlanda Värnamo. Due to the location of Vrigstadsån flows. The name Vrigstads should be derived from place to tortuous river. In the immediate vicinity, a stone circle and the remains of domestic settlements from the Stone and Bronze Ages.

The place was an inn where the famous biologist Carl Linnaeus stayed. The tradition is continued by lying near the church Vrigstads Wärdshus.

Riverside several industrial enterprises settled that no longer exist today, however. So there was a brewers, dyers and tanners. In place today consist primarily enterprises of the timber industry, the use of the surrounding forests as a raw material supplier, as sawmills and manufacturing company in furniture and prefabricated houses.

Until the 18th century was Vrigstad important trading center, but lost the place no later than the construction of Södra stambanan and the associated station opening in the neighboring Sävsjö important.

1971 Vrigstad was part of the community Sävsjö.

Attractions

The place is located with the Gamla Bankgården Vrigstad a Bank Museum. Located just west of the town center is the church of Vrigstad. Northeast of Vrigstad is on the road to the Sävsjö originates from the Iron Age cemetery of Vrigstad.

The Swedish artist Ture Fabiansson (1910-1994) as well as the translator of hymns David Evert Ekman (1916-2000) died in Vrigstad.
