Stonewall Attack

The Stonewall attack in chess is called a certain white figure structure in the opening. In the ECO codes it is classified under the key D00. A characteristic feature of this system is mainly the white pawn chain c3 -d4 -e3 - f4, the "Stone Wall" ( German: "Stone Wall" ).

The white Stonewall draws on the same version for the blacks in the Dutch defense. The White seeks him in the Queen's Pawn Game, for example via the move order

The tightening pace of whites can make d4xc5 e7 - e6 4 5 b2- b4 a7 - a5 - b5 6 Lf1 noticeable at the analogy to the presumed Queen's Gambit 2 ... c7 - c5 3 c2 c3 Sb8 - c6. The most skillful defense of the Black is 2 e2 -e3 Ng8 - f6 3 Lf1 -d3 Sb8 - c6. The e7 - e5 advance, the scheduled 4 f2 - f4 prevent. But then placed optimally Ld3 is pushed by 4 ... Nc6 - b4 or after abgetauscht 5 Lc1 -d2.

It is possible to transition into the Stonewall attack also from the Bird Opening ( 1 f2 - f4) out.

Principle for the valuation of White's position subject to the same criteria as for the Dutch Defence: White strives for control of the central field e5, weakens at the same time the field e4, which can no longer be controlled by its own farmers. The bishop on c1 is restricted by the white central pawns ( "Bad Runner" ), but can sometimes under rate loss via d2 and e1 be transferred to h4. The Bauer formation is due to their elusive basis points b2 and e3 solid. Black should strive for the exchange of the "good" Ld3.

The Stonewall attack was the mid-1990s as an appropriate means to compete against chess computer. This means locked c5 - c4 ( with attack on the white skater) center, castled short and came after g2 - g4 - g5 and DH5 in a strong attack on the king.
