Storage Management Initiative – Specification

The SMI -S ( Storage Management Initiative - Specification) is generally regarded as the standard basis for future management environments for Storage Area Networks. Heterogeneous storage infrastructures where mass storage solutions from different vendors are used to, are easier to manage through the common, open standard compatibility.

Meanwhile, version 1.0.2 of the specification was presented in a rapid process of the International Committee for Information Technology Standards ( INCITS ). In 2008, Version 1.1 was standardized as ANSI INCITS 388-2008 at ANSI.
