Stránská skála

Stránská skála is a national natural monument on the outskirts of Brno in the Czech Republic. It was proclaimed in 1978 and consists of a 16.6 -acre free-standing rocks of Jurassic limestone. The area is known as paleontological and archaeological site internationally. On fossil record, both the rock-forming marine life as well as the large mammals and cavemen of the Quaternary of scientific interest. In one of about 29 caves were found more than 500,000 years old settlement traces of Homo erectus, and in the Upper Paleolithic developed here a prosperous stone industry. In the presence of the rock provides a habitat for many animals and plants. 429 taxa of higher plants have been counted here, 50 of which are on the Red List of Threatened Species.
