Straßgang

Straßgang ( Slavic straža = Wait, watch tower ) is the 16th district of Graz. It is located in the southwest of Graz at the foot of Buchkogel and Florianiberg.

History

The place Straßgang is an old, already used in Roman times Thoroughfare. The place that had been cultivated by the Aribonen, was in 1055 by Emperor Henry III. this noble revoked due to participation in a rebellion and transferred to the archbishopric of Salzburg. The name of the area around the southern Hard Road ( Hart, once Hartwigesdorf ) goes back to its founder, Count Palatine Hartwig I. of Bavaria ( † 985, forerunner of Aribonen Pfalzgrafenschloss Office). The village Straßgang in 1938 together with Puntigam the 16th district of Graz. 1988 Puntigam is Grazer district to own one ( 17 ).

Structures

  • Church of Our Lady in misery to Straßgang Marienkirche late Gothic with Romanesque expanded core from the early 12th century, 1461. In the north chapel altarpiece by Hans Adam Weissenkircher (1686). The church is the cemetery in a dominant position about 50 meters above the town center.
  • Castle St. Martin is detected since 1144 provost of Admont. In 1557 it was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. The interior of the castle church standing separately from the years 1738-40 is one of the major works of Josef stammer. In the 19th century the park was a large-scale case of the ponds (as ad Wiarn place since 1185 ), which was designed with numerous ponds, paths and caves around the source of the Bruendl creek, to the castle. Since 1914, the building is used as Volksbildungsheim. Since 1936 it is owned by the State of Styria.

  • Rupert's church: first documented in 1354, but the building in the core is early Romanesque or even Carolingian ( end of the 9th century), thus it is perhaps the oldest church in the city of Graz.
