Overview

Operation

As a streaming -enabled player connects Streamripper with the server and receives the data stream packets. Supported are MP3 and Vorbis. Instead of the received material play, and then delete it, this is joined together and left on the hard drive. Based on the metadata sent along reveals itself when a song ends and a new one begins, so that the pieces can be divided into individual files and named accordingly based on the tag information sent along. Streamripper itself is not able to play back the received material, but it can pass locally to a streaming - enabled audio player as a " relay server " so that both for saving as well as playback, only one connection is necessary, which saves bandwidth.

Handling

Streamripper itself is operated via command line without a graphical user interface so that the resource consumption of the computer is minimal. Even external frontends have been published by other programmers, which make your work more comfortable. Furthermore, a Winamp plug- in exists for versions 2, 3 and 5 Here Streamripper is integrated directly into Winamp and operated via a separate surface. Furthermore, there are some variations, which have, for example, of from home over a surface, but these are mostly not developed any further.

Controversy

Dispute

In 2001, the Internet radio provider Live365 became aware of the software and urged the developer John Clegg to discontinue such activities. As Clegg ignored it, began Live365 stations to let Streamripper clients crash to a malicious stream targeted. It was not about the expected music, but a bloated HTML file, which again and again the line " DEFINITION clegg n - large swift fly the female nominal real sucks blood of various animals [syn horsefly, cleg, horse fly ] " (Eng. " Clegg is a large female mosquito which sucks the blood of animals. ") character. Clegg was then gradually removed the support for Live365 stations.

General legal situation in Germany

The law relating to the offer of the software and its use is complex. The Legal Affairs Committee of the Bundestag has recommended to explicitly regulate in the context of a possible "third basket " of copyright reform, the use of recording software (such as the Stream Ripper ) law. Currently, for the legality of the use of critical, among other things, whether the admission of a legal or illegal (for example due to lack of GEMA, GVL or application) sending Internet radio takes place and whether it is an interactive radio station or not. The inclusion of a non-interactive pirate radio station is probably prohibited by § 96 para 2 of the Copyright Act. However, it is not likely from criminal or civil consequences, it is but ( can detect if the user does not have the inadmissibility ) usually on the knowledge of inadmissibility and so on intent ( in the absence of knowledge of inadmissibility ) or to the negligence of the user lack.
