Streusel

Streusel is a simple garnish for desserts and pastries. It consists of one part sugar, one part of fat ( margarine or butter ), and two parts of flour. Vanilla, lemon, cinnamon, cocoa or chopped hazelnuts for flavoring are common. Fat and sugar are blended with the flavors and then loosely mixed with the flour until a crumbly consistency is obtained. The ingredients may not be kneaded too hard and too long while since the Sprinkles otherwise be hard.

Streusel is used for countless baked goods like crumb cake, apple or plum cake, Streuselschnecken, Streuseltaler, Crumbles and many others.

Streuselbrötchen, soft yeast rolls with Streuselbelag are an Aachen specialty.
