Strömsholm Canal

The Strömsholms Canal is a navigable canal in central Sweden. It is about 110 kilometers long and leads along the watercourse Kolbäcksån of the Bergslagen mining for Mälaren. It is named after the place Strömsholms in which the channel opens Galten in the Mälarbucht. The Strömsholms Channel is part of the Ekomuseums Bergslagen.

History

The Strömsholms Canal was built 1777-1795 to further connect the iron mines and smelting works in Bergslagen with the transport paths on the Mälaren to Stockholm and to the Baltic Sea. He has 26 locks that overcome a height difference of about 100 meters. Leg construction had to be just 12 kilometers dug, the remainder consisting of lakes that were made ​​navigable. The northern port of destination is in Surahammar. Between 1842 and 1860 the canal was rebuilt and 1992/1993 upgraded for recreational boating.
