Surahammar

Surahammar is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västmanland County and the historic province of Västmanland.

It is the capital of the municipality of the same name. The place name Sura ( acidic) Hammar (Hammer) refers to the iron-processing factories that have shaped the city for many years.

History

The place was formed by the river Kolbäcksån as a center for the processing of iron ore from the nearby Norberg. By the end of the 17th century there was only a small hammer mill which was slightly increased in the following century. The real boom came in 1845 with the takeover by the goldsmith EA Zethelius from Stockholm. This development has increased in 1872 as a joint stock company Surahammars bruks AB was founded. It resulted in several blast furnaces, rolling mills and forging, which produced, among other products for the Swedish railway system.

1916, the Company had approximately 1,350 employees and produced products for together 9.55 million Swedish crowns. On an island in the Kolbäcksån the castle-like main building of the company was established. For the positive development of the town also caused the construction of the railway line between Stockholm and Västerås Bergslagen, which had a connection to a local narrow-gauge railway here.
