Struga Municipality

The Opština Struga ( Macedonian Општина Струга; Albanian Komuna e Strugës ) is one of the 84 Opštini Macedonia. It is part of the southwest region. Administrative seat is the town of Struga on Lake Ohrid, after the Opština is named.

Geography

The Opština of Struga is bordered to the west by Albania, to the north is bordered by Centar Zupa, to the east and south of Lake Ohrid Debarca forms the natural administrative boundary. It also surrounds the Opština of Vevčani in the west to Albania a completely.

The Black Drin is jammed after about 20 kilometers from its outflow at Globočica and thus forms the reservoir of the same name. The hydropower plant was completed in 1965 and has a total capacity of 42 megawatts.

To the west of Opština to Albania through the mountains of Jablanica, in the north of the Karaorman Mountains ( highest point on the municipal area i J. 1791 m. ) Raise ( highest point on the municipal area i J. 2257 m. ) And to the east a outside the Opština lying mountain range ( highest peak 1196 m. By 2004 Labunista, Velesta, Lukovo and Delogozdi formed independent Opštini. However, they were connected in this year by the reforms in the Macedonian local government of Opština Struga.

Flora and Fauna

On the slopes of the Jablanica mountain range, there are many wine-growing areas and chestnut plantations. So here the horse chestnut leaf miner was first detected in 1984 in Europe. Furthermore, the beech is very common. From a mountain height of 1200 m. i J. there are more and softwoods. Near the lake grow walnut and fig trees. There are also many places cypresses and poplars.

In the higher mountain areas live among others - today much less numerous than in the past - wolves, lynx, chamois, ibex and brown bears. Also, deer, marten and wild boar found in the forested areas - especially in the north of the Opština area - suitable habitat. The birdlife around the lake is very rich in species developed.
