His competitive debut came in September 2000 in a League Cup match against Macclesfield Town. In October he was imprisoned for two months at Halifax Town awarded in the fourth-rate Third Division and convinced that he was named to Division Three's Player of the Month during his six missions so. The 2001/02 season he missed completely because of injuries, was able to play again but then in the squad. In August 2003, he was placed by a knee injury for four months out of action, and then had problems re-establish the connection. Only towards the end of the season he was able to move up to the root formation, but found in the League Cup final against Bolton Wanderers not be considered.

In October 2004, he broke his leg during training and fell in turn several months. Only in the 2005/06 season Parnaby could compete injury free and reached the finals with the club in the UEFA Cup, in which one against FC Sevilla was, however, no chance and were beaten 0-4. He started in the 2006/07 season as a regular player, but was ousted by Andrew Davies and Abel Xavier.

On 1 July 2007 he moved free transfer to Premier League rivals Birmingham City and signed a contract until 2010 there.
