The rural community Súðavík ( Isl Súðavíkurhreppur ) lies in the region Vestfirðir in northwestern Iceland.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 212 inhabitants, in the main town of the same name lived 178 inhabitants. The municipality also includes the Reykjanes place.

On 1 January 1995, the rural communities Ögur ( Ögurhreppur ) and Reykjarfjörður were incorporated ( Reykjafjarðarhreppur ).

Geography

The municipal area is cut from west to east of the fjords Álftafjörður, Seydisfjörður, Hestfjörður, Skötufjörður, Mjóifjörður and Isafjordur.

Súðavík

Súðavík is a small fishing village in the Álftafjörður. This area was formerly the site of Norwegian fishermen in Langeyri is still on the southern edge of the village is an abandoned Norwegian whaling station.

At the foot of a mighty and like everywhere in Iceland treeless from the medium altitude mountain slope, the site was repeatedly plagued by avalanches. Last 22 of the 70 houses were destroyed on 16 January 1995 in an avalanche, and killed 14 people.

Then a large part of the village was rebuilt elsewhere. In this part of the village lies the Arctic fox center, which includes an exhibition and a cafe.

In Súðavík is the headquarters of Iceland Sea Angling, an organizer for deep sea fishing trips.

West, in Skutulsfjörður is the center of the Westfjords region, Isafjordur.

Population Development

The decline in population between 1997 and 2006 was 17%.
