Succession to the Saudi Arabian throne

The succession in Saudi Arabia is determined by the Saud dynasty. It follows the Senioratsprinzip, and it is possible that a prince skipped, or may be appointed early. So far, the succession was negotiated by consensus among all the sons of the country's founder died in 1953 Abd al Aziz ibn Saud. So far, five of his sons resided in Riyadh Royal Palace: Saud, Faisal, Khalid, Fahd and Abdullah now.

The current King Abdullah appointed his half-brother Crown Prince Sultan of Saudi Arabia. However, there were at least three brothers ( Bandar, Musa'id, Mishal ) who were older than Sultan. They let him go first for health reasons, after deliberation within the family, or because they simply did not want to participate in the government.

King Abdullah announced in October of 2006, the founding of the Bay'ah Council, which shall consist of the surviving sons and oldest grandsons of King Abdul Aziz, as well as from representatives of deceased or incapacitated sons. The Council shall provide in the event of sudden incapacity or death of King and Crown Prince for a smooth change of power and the renewal of a ruler. Together with an earlier law of King Fahd now there is also the possibility that the grandson of Abd al - Aziz ibn Saud qualify as candidates in question. In addition to age, there still seems to give the following additional decision criteria:

  • The support of the candidates within the Saud dynasty
  • Government experience
  • Tribal affiliation of the mother of the candidate
  • Exercise of religion
  • Acceptance by the Ulama
  • Support from the business leaders of the country
  • Popularity among the Saudi population

The reform was completed in October of 2007.

On October 21, 2011 Crown Prince Sultan died. Then Naif ibn Abd al - Aziz was appointed as the new crown prince. A few months later Naif died on 16 June 2012. 's Successor as Crown Prince Salman ibn his brother Abd al- Aziz was appointed on 18 June 2012, which also remains defense minister.
