Sudan Railways 250 class

The vehicles with the numbers 250-259 of the Sudan Railways (SR ) were articulated type locomotives Garratt. They were the first locomotives with the wheel arrangement ( 2'C2 ') ( 2'C2 '), also called " Double Hudson " or "Double Baltic ", and one of the world's only two series with this axle assembly.

The ten locomotives were 1936 and 1937 supplied by Beyer- Peacock, the first and only Garratt - series of the Sudan Railways. The Garratt for a relatively large number of synchronized axes was needed to accommodate on weak tracks a large water reservoir can. The field of application were the routes between Port Sudan to Atbara and of Atbara by Wad Madani.

A strengthening of the superstructure, which allowed the use steifrahmiger steam locomotives, and the use of diesel locomotives already made the Garratts superfluous shortly after the Second World War. After only 12 years of service in 1949, all ten locomotives were sold to the Rhodesian Railways (RR ), where they were classified as class 17 with the numbers 271 to 280. There she completed the locomotives of Class 15/15A, which had the same wheel arrangement and the same driving wheel diameter, but were heavier and catchy.

After 15 years of service in Rhodesia, the ten locomotives were in 1964 sold to the CFM in Mozambique, where they were given the numbers 921-930. They were on the Beira Railway, which runs from the port city of Beira to Zimbabwe, until well into the 1980s in use.

The further fate of the locomotives in stricken by civil war, Mozambique is unclear. In statements obtained Garratt locomotives, however, is no longer included, so that one must assume that they are now scrapped.
