Surface, rail bridge, bus

Exist on the road surface of the road train of Favorites road and of her here south branching Laxenburg road in north-south direction and the Wiedner Gürtel, here in a short underpass, in east-west direction, several turn lanes from east to south the tracks the tram line O from the belt to Laxenburg road and stops the bus line 69A. Until the completion of the U1, 1978, wrong here further tram lines 66 and ( 1) 67 in north-south direction between ring, opera, and southern parts of the district of favorites.

The Southern Railway crossed to 2009, the southern place finish with road favorites and Laxenburg street in high position on a bridge in west-east direction, in addition to the east was a railway station signal box to the South Station. Since the new main station was built to the south of the former railway station, this bridge was replaced by a bridge until 2012 in the curve to the southeast and demolished in the old railway signal box.

With construction of the new central train station, in 2009, the favorite road was in 1959, completed largest bus station in Vienna, which is mainly served by local bus routes to the south, east of his place on the so-called Waldmann grounds west of the road, also north of the railway track and south of the belt, laid and rebuilt.

Step by step construction of the interchange

To be in the 1950s can provide the ever increasing road traffic more space, decided the Vienna City Administration to move the tram station Südtirolerplatz the trains running on the belt 18 in an underpass. In parallel, four lanes of the Wiedner Gürtel and should pass under the road favorites. At the same time, work on the high-speed railway tunnel and the stop of the S- Bahn route taken by the ÖBB.

The tram station, which consists of two directly opposed side platforms for two trains, including stairways and a connecting passage to the then still under construction S-Bahn station, could be opened to traffic on May 7, 1959. A special feature of a wall mosaic, an oblique view of Vienna with raised symbols for the sights, mounted on a small piece of the north side wall of the station. The tram line O kept on the Wiedner Gürtel coming from the east, still at an above-ground station, as it turns into the Laxenburg road and does not continue along the belt.

The train took the full operations on 17 January 1962. Two side platforms have this built in the prepared cover tunnel under the South Tyrolean place.

Since the underpass tram proven, a subsequent west directly to the underground station tram tunnel was built in an open design that leads from the South Tyrolean place among the Wiedner Gürtel and the Margaret belt over the stations Blechturmgasse, Kliebergasse and Matzleinsdorf space station Oak Street and including a turn south to the road and a source on the station Laurenzgasse in the Wiedner Hauptstrasse direction ring measures 3.4 kilometers. This piece of track that replaces the western ramp of the underground tram stop Südtirolerplatz on the street level, was officially opened on 11 January 1969. The tunnel section is referred to as U- tram, short Ustrab.

Among the installations mentioned above is the connection structure between the older part of the traffic station and built until 1978 subway station. The S- Bahn route is here from them under moving at right angles, in the north -south transport U- Bahn line U1 crossed.

The metro station is located in deep level three floors below the until 2014 eponymous South Tyrolean square, between the junction of the (inner) Favorite road in the square and extends in an underpass Wiedner Gürtel. It has a central platform and was opened as part of the commissioning of the first section of U1 between Reumann and Karlsplatz on 25 February 1978. The two tubes of the U1 were built in a closed construction and cross under in about 20 feet of water extending in an east-west direction traffic construction.

Outputs from the metro station leading to both sides of how the U1 runs Favorites road to Kolschitzkygasse (you can take the bus No. 13A change ) and on the South Tyrolean place where a mezzanine and a passage of the component from 1959 can be achieved.

At the siting of the metro station was criticized ever since. By 2009, the distance from South Station ( 400 meters ) was criticized. Reference is now made to the not much shorter distance to the platforms of the new central train station ( it is about 300 meters). A partially eröffneter in 2010 pedestrian tunnel but in 2015 the existing traffic station connected directly to the main hall of the station.

At the high-speed railway station, the largest work was necessary. At the beginning of the construction work, the ceiling of the built in open cut tunnel has been removed. As a next step, the two side platforms were extended to 210 m and replaced the overhead line against overhead conductor rails. Then the distant ceiling was rebuilt. Furthermore, a new exit to the Argentinierstraße ever built platform.
