Suez Canal

The Suez Canal Bridge (Arabic كوبري السلام, peace bridge ', English Suez Canal Bridge, Al Salam Bridge ) is a road bridge over the Suez Canal at El Qantara in Egypt.

The bridge was opened on 9 October 2001 under the name of Egyptian- Japanese Friendship Bridge ( Egyptian - Japanese Friendship Bridge ) by the former President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak. Later, she was only called Mubarak Peace Bridge. After Mubarak's dismissal in 2011, the name of peace bridge appears to be in use in Egypt by foreigners it is often referred to simply Suez Canal Bridge.

Building

The Suez Canal Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in which the ropes are arranged in the fan system and are supported by two H pylons. The main bridge has a span of 404 m, which is flanked on both sides by a ramp bridge with almost 1.8 km in length. The main bridge consists of a 10 m-wide steel structure with 154 m high pylons of reinforced concrete, which are reminiscent of the obelisk. The flyovers are a prestressed concrete box construction on reinforced concrete piers. The total length of the structure is 3.9 km.

The bridge has a clear height of 70 m above the water level of the Suez Canal, so that they may be crossed by ships up to a height of 68 m. The Mubarak Peace Bridge is the clear height of 70 m the highest built on flat land bridge and generally one of the highest bridges over waterways.

Development project financing

The bridge was part of an Egyptian development project from the year 1994 to the development of agriculture, mining and tourism in the Sinai Peninsula. It was funded by a grant from the Japanese Official Development Assistance, which was agreed during a visit of the President Mubarak in Japan in 1995. The grant covered 60 % of the construction costs and 13.5 billion yen (approx. € 124 million); the remaining 40 % and 9 billion yen ( € 82 million) were supported by Egypt.
