Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in South Africa in the Gauteng province south of Johannesburg, near the city of Heidelberg with a size of 133.37 square kilometers at present. It was established in 1970 and declared on 27 March 1974 nature reserve.

The nature reserve was named after the Protea caffra - the " Transvaal Suikerbos " ( Afrikaans: sugar bush )

The lowest point of the area is situated on 1545 m height. It includes the " sugar Summit" (altitude: 1,917 meters) one of the highest elevations in the Highveld.

Flora and Fauna

  • Fauna: Approx. 24 large animal artery - including zebras, several species of antelope, wildebeest; hyena
  • Approx. 200 species of birds

Tourism

The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is located about one hour by car south of Johannesburg, close to the N3 motorway.

In the center of the area there is a facility offering accommodation, campsites and picnic / barbecue areas.

The area opens up over 66 km of hiking / biking trails and a ( one-way street / round course developed ) Road ( 60 km long).
