Sulfonamide

Sulfonamides are a group of organic chemical sulfur compounds which can be described as amides of sulfonic acids. They contain a sulfonamide group, which is more accurately referred to as sulfonic acid amide.

Sulphonamides are polar solids, their simplest representative is Methansulfonsäureamid.

Identification as a functional group in the systematic naming of: sulfamoyl, sulfonamide, sulfamide

Production

In the reaction of sulfonyl chlorides with ammonia, primary amines or secondary amines, sulfonamides arise.

Importance

The main representatives of this group are the antibiotic sulfonamides, which have practical significance as drugs.

Only chemistry historical significance of the Hinsberg separation, an analytical method for the separation of primary, secondary and tertiary amines. This tertiary amines do not react with benzenesulfonyl chloride. The sulfonamides of primary amines can be separated from the sulfonamides, secondary amines, since the former contain an acidic hydrogen atom on the nitrogen atom, which can be deprotonated with sodium hydroxide solution and thus is water soluble.
