Sulpicius Alexander

Sulpicius Alexander was a late ancient Roman historian, who probably lived in the late 5th century 4./frühen.

About Sulpicius Alexander, little is known. He wrote a Latin work of history, which included at least four books and at least the period until the death of Emperor Valentinian II (392 ) treated. Whether the work still went until the 5th century, is unknown. It has not survived, but used the living later in the 6th century Gregory of Tours, the Historia of Sulpicius Alexander and quoted at one point in great detail from the factory. The Historia of Sulpicius Alexander stood next to the representation of Renatus Profuturus Frieridus is probably one of Gregor's main sources for the early history of the Franks; the extracts obtained provide important information regarding II of the Franks and the situation at the court of Valentinian.

Both Sulpicius Alexander and Frieridus apparently stood in the tradition of classical historiography, which began to flourish once again in late antiquity. Thus, when Sulpicius Alexander a failed campaign of the Romans and the Franks in the year 388 is represented in the traditional Gregor reduction based on the pattern of clades Variana (see Marcomer, Sunno and Gennobaudes ). The example of Sulpicius Alexander and Frieridus shows that even after Ammianus Marcellinus quite Latin historical works have been created in a classic style yet, although today is none received it. It is possible that Sulpicius Alexander has written his work in connection to Ammianus Marcellinus, whose Res ended Gestae 378.
