Sultan al-Atrash

Sultan al - Atrash (Arabic: سلطان الأطرش; born March 5, 1891 in al - Qurayya, Vilayet of Syria, † March 26, 1982 ebdenda ) was a famous Arab Druze leader, Syrian nationalist and Commander General of the Syrian Revolution ( 1925-1927 ). He fought against the Ottomans, French, and even against the Syrian government in times of dictatorship. As one of the most influential people in the Syrian and Druze history, he played a major role in deciding the fate of the Druze Mountains, the State Druze and of Syria in general.

Family

Sultan al - Atrash was in al - Qurayya, a town about 20 km south of Suwayda, born into the famous Druze family al - Atrash, who nominally ruled the region since 1879. His father Zuqan led the Druze revolt of Hauran1910 in al - Kefr against the Ottomans. He was captured and later, in 1911, was executed. His son Mansur al - Atrash was an active member of the Syrian regional branch of the Baath Party until the military coup of 1966 to the fall of Michel Aflaq, Salah ad-Din al - Bitar, Munif al - Razzaz and the classic Baathist led in general.

Life

Sultan al - Atrash also himself fought against the Ottoman Empire. He hoisted during the First World War, the Arab flag while taking Damascus by France in September 1918., When the French established its own mandate rule in Syria, led Atrash in 1925 the Syrian revolution against France, but was after the bloody suppression of the uprising and the massacre of thousands exiled members of the religious minority of Druze to Jordan. He returned in 1937 to Syria back, but this time he was no great political influence.

Sultan al - Atrash died on March 26, 1982 of a heart attack. His funeral was attended by over one million people, and the President of Syrian Arab Republic Hafez al -Assad wrote a letter in which he appointed al - Atrash to the Supreme Commander of the Great Syrian Revolution.
