Sultanate of Deli

Deli was a sultanate in the eastern part of Sumatra, which was founded in 1630. The tributary kingdom ( 1630-1814 ) in 1814 with the achievement of independence by the independent Sultanate of Siak Sultanate. Its capital was Medan and the surface area was 1820 km ².

History

In the middle of the 15th century the ruler of Aceh converted to the Islamic faith. Founder of the Sultanate of Aceh was Ali Mughayat Syah († 1530), which began to extend its control over all of northern Sumatra in conquests from 1520. Under the twelfth Sultan Iskandar Muda of Aceh ( 1583 - 1636) reached the Sultanate of its greatest territorial extent, in 1612 conquered and annexed the " Young Alexander" ( literal translation from Iskandar Muda ) the area of the later Sultanate of Deli, which until then by the Portuguese was controlled.

The Dutch intervention of 1861 followed a year later by a contract with the Dutch East Indies, strengthening Delis independence from Siak and Aceh. Today, the area is part of Indonesia.
