Iskandar Muda

Iskandar Muda (* 1583; ? † December 27, 1636 ) was the 12th Sultan of Aceh on Sumatra.

Under him, the Sultanate of Aceh reached its greatest extent. Iskandar Muda translates as Alexander the Younger. This comparison with Alexander the Great refers to his numerous campaigns, especially against the Portuguese, who controlled the Straits of Malacca. Iskandar Muda tied relations with the Ottoman Empire, from which he received military aid. His court attracted many Islamic teachers. Iskandar Muda was able to wrest control of the Straits of Malacca to the Portuguese temporarily, but to conquer the trials Malacca itself failed. But he could expel the Portuguese in 1612 from the City Deli and gain parts of the east coast of Sumatra in 1614 and defeat the Portuguese fleet at Bintan. Iskandar Muda is now in Indonesia as one of the national heroes.
