Sultanhanı

Sultanhanı is a caravanserai halfway between Konya and Aksaray to the D 300 in today's Turkey. Founded in 1229 under the Seljuk ruler of Kai Kobad I., she grew up, because of the central location on the historical Silk Road and the Seljuk caravan quickly and is now the largest caravanserai in Asia Minor.

The caravanserai is situated in the village Sultanhanı. You enter through a richly decorated portal in the northeast and passes into a rectangular courtyard in the middle of a small mosque stands. The entrance portal towards close to the courtyard to the stables, the base of which again corresponds approximately to the size of farm. The vaulted roof of the stables carry 32 columns that divide the space into several ships. Here pitched the pack animals and in the cold season, their companion. During the warmer months, people slept on the roof, which they could reach by stairs to the courtyard wall.

1950 many parts of the complex were destroyed by an earthquake, but now they are restored.

History

The caravanserai was built in the 13th century. She is one of twelve caravanserais, built following the Sultans of Rum between the then capital of Konya and the second largest city of Kayseri. For these hostels that humans and animals supplied with all the necessities, the merchants had to pay a tax annually.
