Sunart

Sunart ( Scottish Gaelic Suaineart ) is a rural area and a municipality in south-western Lochaber, Highland, Scotland, on the north shore of Loch Sunart. Today, it is often considered as part Ardnamurchans. The main village is Strontian, at the head of the hole where the Ardnamurchan High School, the local fire and police station and other facilities are located.

The area is bounded to the south from the eastern part hole Sunarts and partly from Morvern, west of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, from which it separated (from salen ), in the north of Loch Shiel and the east and northeast of the Ardgour region, by a range of hills will. Reachable the area is now on the Corran Ferry and the A861 from the east, although this road also allows access from Lochailort in the northwest via Moidart. Although the area looks today isolated, but the ship was formerly principal means of transportation in the West Highlands and the region was integrated into the coastal economy and culture.

Almost the entire population Sunarts lives in a narrow strip of small settlements on the north shore of Loch Sunart. The interior, including the shores of Loch Shiel, consists of rough, hilly country, often bog and forest, dominated by the main hill, the Beinn Resipol.

The main industries of the area are tourism and salmon farming.

Nature

The area is known for the Fully awareness of their wild life and has some of the best preserved ancient temperate Atlantic oak forests that once the majority of the west coast of Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany covered, but today only occur in isolated regions. Loch Sunart itself also has a rich flora and fauna. Previously, salmon and trout fishing was important for the local hotels, but as in most of Europe, the fish are not as plentiful in the spring and summer.

The area should include the mild, humid oceanic climate of the most varied in Europe in terms of fungus, lichen and moss species.

Currently runs a campaign to combat the population of Rhododendron ponticum, an invasive, introduced Neophytenspezies.
