Super FX

The Super FX chip was developed by Argonaut Games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to increase as additional processor in game modules, the performance of the game console.

The RISC-like mathematical processor ( frequency 10.5 MHz) was specialized to support the console in the calculation and display of shaded and textured 3D polygons.

It was used in five Super Nintendo games:

  • Dirt Racer
  • Dirt Trax FX
  • Starwing ( in the U.S. and Japan as StarFox known)
  • Stunt Race FX
  • Vortex

Modules with the Super FX chip had in addition to the normal contact pins additional contacts that prevented the use of the modules in some NTSC to PAL converters or Duplicators. In addition, modules were more expensive because of the additional built-in hardware manufacture. This had the consequence that the sale price for games with Super FX support was higher than in other games.

Super FX2

The successor of the Super FX chip had a clock frequency of 21 MHz.

Games in which the Super FX2 was used are:

  • Doom
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Iceland
  • Winter Gold

For further FX games, the development was canceled:

  • Comanche
  • FX Fighter
  • Powerslide
  • Star Fox 2
  • Transformers
  • Nintendo
  • Microprocessor
