Supracondylar process of the humerus

The processus supracondylar is a rare atavistic formation at the lower end of the upper arm bone ( humerus). It is a bony protrusion, which occurs in 0.7 % of all people. While the phylogeny, this bone spur regressed, but it is in other vertebrates (eg, cats) as foramen supracondylare still available. From this projection a band ( Struthers ligament ) extends to the medial epicondyle of the humerus, and serves as the origin of the pronator teres.

The brachial artery and the median nerve pass at present processus supracondylar osteofibrous by a channel which can lead to compression of the two structures. Also in cats these pathways pass through the foramen supracondylare.
