Supraśl

Supraśl is a town of about 4700 inhabitants in north-eastern Poland.

Geographical location

Supraśl located near the Belarusian border - about 15 kilometers northeast of Białystok. It belongs to the Podlaskie Voivodeship (since 1999) in the powiat Białostocki and is the seat of the Gmina Supraśl. Previously belonged to Supraśl Voivodeship Białystok.

Attractions

In Supraśl the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is (also: Supraśl Lavra ) - a former Basilian monastery and today one of six men monasteries of the Polish Orthodox Church. The cloister is surrounded by baroque buildings of the 17th and 18th centuries. The center of the monastery square forms the monastery church " Cerkiew Zwiastowania Marii Panny Najświętszej " ( " Annunciation Church "). It was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style and is considered one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Poland. Today, the former palace of the abbots a museum that houses one of the most important collections of icons in Poland. The significant homiliary Suprasliensis Codex, one of the oldest Slavic writings of Poland and one of the oldest of its kind in the world, was named after the monastery Lavra Suprasl. Since 20 September 2007, he is a UNESCO World Documentary Heritage by UNESCO.

In addition, located in Supraśl also a former evangelical church with a cemetery and the palace of the manufacturing family Buchholtz, who in 1903 was rebuilt in neo-renaissance style.
