Supreme Court of Namibia

The Supreme Court is the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Namibia.

The court is legally based on paragraph 79 of the Constitution of Namibia and the development in the Government Gazette, No. 84 of 8 October 1990.

The Court has its seat in the capital Windhoek. Currently, "His Lordship the honorable Chief Justice " (English His Lordship, the Honourable Chief Justice ) Peter Shivute the highest judicial office held.

History

The Supreme Court was established with independence on 21 March 1990. The Court is both the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court of the country. It is the first court of its kind on the territory of today's Namibia. At the time of South West Africa, all decisions by the Supreme Court of South Africa had to be confirmed.

Courthouse

The building of the Supreme Court was built in the early 1990s in the Windhoek Central. It was designed by an architect Namibian Office of Swakopmund. The building was designed in accordance with North African buildings and should differ significantly from the European buildings of the previous years under foreign rule. Special attention was paid to the two-sided colonnade and the garden, which was planted exclusively with Namibian plants down.

Inside the building is located next to the library, founded in 1997, the public foyer and landscaped around a courtyard courtrooms with visitors galleries and the memorial garden.

Judge

The Supreme Court is the Chief Justice before the supreme judge. He is supported by additional judges, including the judges of Appeal are above the Acting Judges. All of these are appointed by the President of Namibia as chairman of the Judicial Service Commission.

Chief Justice

Since the establishment of the court with the independence of Namibia in 1990, there were various presiding judge. The presiding judge of the predecessor Court Supreme Court of South West Africa (Supreme Court of South West Africa ), Mr. HJ Berker, 1990 was the first Chief Justice of Namibia. After his death in 1992, the Constitutional Court I. Mohammed took over the office. In 1999 he resigned from his office and Mr. GJC Strydom, by then Chief Justice of the High Court was Chairman of the Supreme Court His successors were after his resignation in 2004 Peter Shivute.
