Surat Shabd Yoga

The Surat Shabd Yoga meditation is the form of the Radhasoami entstamme ends Sant Mat movement ( Path of the Masters ). The practitioner of Surat Shabd Yoga ( attention - Sound Current ) seek in meditation on the inner light or sound perception. Additional element is the mental recitation of special, secret mantras ( Simran ), which provide protection against negative influences and to channel divine energy on yourself.

Initiation ritual

For the practice of meditation a dedication ritual is necessary, comparable to a Buddhist transmission ( Abisheka or VAK ). Therefore, this ritual is always performed by a guru ( light bearer ), masters or a person authorized by this (IBV ). Unauthorized disclosure of initiation instructions bringing according to the faith of the followers of Surat Shabd Yoga severe spiritual damage with it and is therefore hardly exercised. With the initiation ritual specific program points are connected:

  • An introduction to Sant Mat
  • The notice of the conditions ( primarily abstinence from meat, fish, eggs, alcohol and drugs )
  • Tradition of meditation instructions to transfer the land used for meditation God's name (not required in at least one of the spin-offs )
  • The meditation on the Light and Sound

The ritual takes about 3 hours. It is free to participants, in part, to retain their identity for themselves. A link with other students, organization or the master is recommended, but not necessary. Although specified as essential, it is up to each itself to fulfill the requirements.

Light and Sound

Light and sound are considered in the Surat Shabd Yoga as directly observable aspects of the revelation of the supreme God Radhasoami. The aim is to gradually connection of man with the Licht-/Tonstrom, which eventually means the one with the polar state of always unrevealed Nameless and Wordless ( Alakh, Agam and Anami ). The goal is a condition in which the students themselves experienced only as pure consciousness and part of the supreme God Radhasoami and acts as such. This condition is expected to open self-knowledge, God-realization, deep inner peace, unfailing love and perfect understanding of all living creatures to man.

The Surat Shabd Yoga is an exercise that aims to develop the people, as in other forms of Yoga to a Divine Master. Nevertheless, Sant Mat is not a religion, but rather as experiential or referred to a kind of empirical science. Belonging to a traditional religion includes the practice of Surat Shabd Yoga is not enough. Belonging to a religion is not necessary to practice this yoga.

Origins

The Sant Mat movement was founded in 1861 by Shiv Dayal Singh in Agra, who was strongly influenced by Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion. It was passed from gurus like Baba Jaimal Singh and Baba Sawan Singh and Kirpal Singh.

Conservative estimates of the movement go from about 2-3 million people from around the world that can have initiated into this yoga but not necessarily practicing. Some gurus like Thakar Singh and single individuals of the movement are advised in connection with scandals and disputes in the public eye.

Criticism

Especially over the past 200 years was created by ambiguities in the many gurus follow a variety of groups that are more or less opposed to. The given to meditation God's name differ depending on MATCHING Guru more or less from each other. So Sant Kirpal Singh gave (1894 - 1974) Muslim pupils the names in the derived from the Islamic Sufi tradition Arabic form, but most of the other in the given by the Sikh Gurus form. While there are often five words, only the Naam, or even none at all be awarded in some gurus less, in some Radhasoami groups, which seems doubtful and questionable, at least in the context of existing since Guru Nanak tradition. The Surat Shabd Yoga is always strongly doubted by people who are confronted with it. In particular, it is claimed, the practitioners would be able to see or hear in truth nothing. This impression may arise because all people are given the strict instructions at the inauguration and in the lectures of the Master to tell their inner experiences under any circumstances other people. In fact, the effects of this yoga have been scientifically studied. There are no studies or statistics on this form of meditation.
