Surčin ( Serbian Cyrillic Сурчин ) is a city and municipality in Serbia.

The city belongs to the metropolitan area of ​​the capital Belgrade and was until 2003 a part of Zemun. According to the census of 2011, the city of 17,356 and the municipality of 42 012 inhabitants.

History

The territory was settled in the early history of mankind. Finds from prehistoric times are quite common. So far, it is clear that there were earlier settlements in the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Stone Age and Roman times.

From 1991 to 2002, the population of the community grew from 35 591 to 38 695 on. The majority were refugees in the aftermath of the Yugoslav wars.

Surčin was a separate municipality until 1965, before it was incorporated into the municipality of Zemun. Once there were more votes for went fabless Zemun, agreed to the Belgrade City Assembly and Surčin 2003 was again an independent municipality.

Economy

The majority of the population is engaged in agriculture. The main facility is the Belgrade airport, opened on 28 April 1962.
