Surtr

Surt ( Old Norse Surtr " the Black " ) is in Norse mythology, a fire giant and an enemy of the Aesir. He is the ruler of Muspellsheim.

In Ragnarok he severed with his sword of fire Surtalogi the bridge Bifrost, the link between Midgard and Asgard. With the sons Muspels he puts the world on fire, hurls fire in all directions and destroyed all life (World Brand). He kills the unarmed Freyr in a fight.

Effective history

After Surt ( Surtur ) is called a volcanic cave on Iceland Surtshellir. A formed by volcanic activity until 1963-67 island south-west of Iceland is called after him Surtsey ( "Island of Surt ").
