Both their German and her Egyptian heritage express themselves, along with personal experiences, in their multiple works from which build bridges between different cultures and their traditions and idiosyncrasies reflect. Cross-cultural codes probing, Hefuna plays in her work consistently with the intent and effect of images by creating abstract spaces and contexts with a wide range of meanings can fill the viewer. The temporal and spatial indicators depend on the cultural and social reflections and projections of the respective viewer.

A recurring inspiration for Susan Hefuna work is the Maschrabiyya a delicately carved wooden or stone carved fretwork panels or window bars, such as those found in traditional Egyptian architecture. This motif first appeared in Hefuna drawings in layers of tracing paper in 1990 and in their photographs taken in 1999 on the streets of Cairo with a pinhole camera. In 2003, she began with traditional Egyptian craftsmen to work to produce three-dimensional sculptural lattice panels. Hefuna first solo exhibition in Egypt in 1992 was a key experience. The motif of Mashrabiyas in her abstract photographs was recognized by the Egyptian audience immediately. The viewer saw the very essence of their work and not their reflection, while in Germany their work was perceived as a purely Western-influenced abstract art. From this point on their work and their working method has increasingly been informed of this double resonance. The international recognition of your drawings reached in 2009 at the 53rd Venice Biennale a climax when in the exhibition entitled " Fare Mondi " ( " Making Worlds " ) in the Giardini and the Arsenale about 300 of its multi-layered ink and pencil drawings shown on tracing paper were.
