Sviby ( German Swibi ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Vormsi ( Vormsi vald ) in Lääne. The place is located in the southeast of the fourth largest Estonian island of Vormsi ( German Worms, Swedish Ormsö ).

Population and location

Sviby has 22 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) .. The place was inhabited until the Second World War, like all the villages Vormsis majority of Estonian Swedes. In place is a memorial to the wartime relocation of the population to Sweden.

The village center is situated near the bay of the same name ( Sviby Laht ). To the west stretches the elongated promontory of Langholm with their head, the Rumpo nina.

Port

South of the village center of Sviby is the main port of the island Vormsi. From there, a regular boat service on the Estonian mainland to the port Rohuküla.

History

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1540 under the name Zwybu.

A great fire destroyed at June 14, 1932 a large part of the village. 1932/33, the 171 long pier was built, connecting the pier to the land.

Bauernmuseum Sviby

The Farmer's Museum of Sviby ( Sviby talumuuseum ) on the farm Pearsgården gives an insight into the lifestyle of local villagers and the history of Estonia Sweden Vormsi. In the thatched main house regularly hosts photo exhibitions.
